Your crew will welcome you aboard your luxury vessel around 5:00pm with drinks and canapés, before you settle in for dinner as we cruise towards the Rowley Shoals. You will have the night to familiarise yourself with the boat, meet your fellow passengers and settle into your cabin.
After arriving at Clerk Reef at approximately 8:00 am, Great Escape will navigate the narrow channel to anchor inside the lagoon. Here we will embark on our first dive of the trip, allowing you to familiarise yourself with the equipment and the new environment. The area is abundant with colourful coral, small caves and a multitude of tropical fish species.
The second dive for the day will be a drift dive through the channel to Clerk Reef, after which lunch will be served inside the lagoon. There’s a great opportunity here to enjoy some snorkelling before we head off for an afternoon drift along the edge of the atoll. You can throw a line in to possibly catch a Sailfish or two. Light permitting, we will end the day with another snorkelling expedition before enjoying drinks and an evening meal.
Great Escape will set off to dive the Western Wall, a coral-encrusted wall with a steep drop and a rocky bottom where you can explore cracks and caves dotted with shells and tropical fish. A cooked breakfast will be served back on board as we cruise to the next dive site which is populated with pelagic fish and larger sharks. After an exciting dive in this area, we will have a delicious lunch on the deck.
In the afternoon, we will cruise around to dive ‘Tiger Alley’, where it’s common to see Tuna, Mackerel, Sharks and large Cod. At sunset, there is an excursion to the sandy cay to observe the rare red-tailed tropical birds that nest on Bedwell Island.
The first dive of the day will be at ‘The Crevasse’. After breakfast and there is time for reef fishing, snorkelling or skurfing. In the afternoon, we can take a quick exploratory dive before heading back in to setup for the night dive, which will take us around the outer edge of the lagoon.
We will arrive back at the boat just before 8:00 pm for dinner.
The day will start with another early dive along the western wall before retuning to the boat for breakfast and cruising over to Mermaid Reef. We will then dive at both 'V in the wall' – a large V-shaped bommie jutting out of the reef edge – as well as 'The Cod Hole'. As the name suggests, three big Potato Cod live here and they like to get up close and personal. The boat will then head in at sunset to anchor up for the evening. At this time we can go skurfing, snorkelling or take off on a night dive to the outer wall. As Mermaid Reef is a National Marine Reserve, there is no fishing permitted here.
Today we set off for the most spectacular dive site of the Rowley Shoals, known simply as ‘The Wall’. This is a drift dive through a reef with a sheer vertical wall that plunges down 110 metres. Large sharks can be spotted here, including the rare greater hammerhead. Before lunch we will dive down to ‘The Caves’, a great area for finding sleeping turtles and unusual shells.
The afternoon dive is at ‘The Net’, our most challenging dive site. You will swim through an intricate web of reef, bommies, overhanging caves and cracks. This dive goes as far down as 40 metres, with stunning coral formations and tropical fish species to be found in abundance. The last dive of the trip will be at twilight, before we pack up and cruise back to Broome.
We’re always asked to dive ‘The Wall’ again, which we can do before breakfast. This will be followed by another drift in the channel as this is also a favourite. Plans will be dependent upon the tides. After lunch, we will do an exploratory dive on an area of the outer reef edge, before heading back into the lagoon to pick up the tenders and prepare for the all-night cruise back to Broome. The last dive of the trip will be at ‘The Cod Hole’.
Arrive back in Broome to disembark at 8am for your transfer back to your accommodation or Broome Airport.
