Australia’s Kimberley region is noted for its strong whale population, with the safe, protected waters of Camden Sound (the Lalang-garram/Camden Sound Marine Park) providing the largest calving areas for Humpbacks whales on earth.
In 2016 a rare late season sighting at Mermaid Reef of the Rowley Shoals in Australia’s north west meant that some lucky guests on The Great Escape witnessed a humpback whale and her calf frolicking.
In the video, the whales approached the vessel which was on a mooring at the time and proceeded to “gatecrash” our snorkelers in the water! They were so keen to interact with our guests, definitely not shy and an unbelievable once in a lifetime, rare experience to see these two so close, so relaxed and clearly enjoying their interaction. Very lucky guests and crew!
Please note Parks Australia – who have jurisdiction over Mermaid Reef at the Rowley Shoals, approved all video footage.
